Seventy years ago, on the 14th of May, a miracle happened. It should have never taken place. It was the fulfillment of many prophecies given over the course of more than twenty-five hundred years. Do you know what event I am writing about?
On May 14, 1948, God raised the nation of Israel out of the ashes of history and sovereignly re-established her as a free nation. Why did He do such a mighty thing? What was His purpose and plan?
Many Bible prophecy scholars say that Jesus, in Matthew, was talking about the rebirth of Israel.
Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place (Matthew 24:32–34).
The fig tree is Israel. Jesus was prophesying of the time to come when the nation would be re-established—when its tender branch was adding new leaves. Israel, God’s symbolic fig tree was not planted in 1948, rather it was awakened and the new growth began. This was already God’s Holy Land. It was born when Joshua took possession of the promise God had made to Abraham.
Where do you and I fit into the fulfillment of this prophecy? Are we a part of the last generation? I believe the answer is yes! But how long is a generation? No one knows for certain. We do know that it will be in God’s timing and for His purpose. It is exciting to realize that we are in the final years before the return of our Lord.
I am reminded of something else Jesus said in the same teaching recorded in Matthew 24:14, where He also prophesied that the Gospel will be proclaimed unto the whole world and then the end shall come. Now this is something we can impact! Cornerstone is dedicated to sharing the Good News of Jesus with as many people as possible, as quickly as possible. I thank you as our partner for joining in this important mission.
