History of Caring Hearts
In 1986 Harold McKamish, with a man he called Brother Knell, began making trips into San Luis Rio Colorado in the state of Sonora in northwest Mexico to rescue and support orphaned children. Living off what they could gather to eat in the city dump, these children had been abandoned for many reasons. Harold set up Caring Hearts Ministries to reach out to these outcasts and castaways with both the practical and eternal love of the Father.

After working for a number of years with a few different orphanages, God led Harold and Brother Knell to the Bethel Orphanage where they discovered an over-worked staff trying to meet the needs of a group of filthy, undernourished children. The buildings were in need of repair and the children in need of clothing. Over the years, the Father has graciously supplied exactly what the ministry needed starting with a caring and capable woman to see to these children's needs. Buildings have been repaired and others built creating the "Albergue Infantil Betel" (Spanish for "Bethel Safe Place for Small Children"). The orphanage has gained such an outstanding reputation in the community that whenever the police find a child abandoned or wandering the streets, they bring them to Betel because they know they will be cared for even if it is just until the parents can be located.

Brother Knell has since received his promotion to glory but Harold has kept up the good work. Every year ministry teams make the trip to San Luis; some renovate older buildings, some build new buildings and some even build houses for a few impoverished families. Still others in the field of medicine make the trip once a year to run a series of clinics all over town, treating sicknesses and diseases of all kinds. With each trip comes the opportunity to share the love and Word of God. Whether it's by handing out rice and beans at the city dump, or feeding up to 300 children a good breakfast on Saturday mornings, there is always a way to share God's love.

Recently Harold approached Cornerstone TeleVision with the idea of joining with us to assure the ongoing ministry of "Caring Hearts." It was a natural idea since Harold was one of Cornerstone's first board members and many of the Cornerstone staff travel to the orphanage each year volunteering their help and assistance.

Cornerstone's Missions Director Tim Burgan says, "This is a wonderful opportunity for our direct involvement in helping and healing the hurting. We have been involved in missions for many years, but now God has opened the door for more personal and intimate involvement."
