Should Christian TV be “safe”?

Sometimes people tell us how much they love Cornerstone TeleVision because it is a “safe place” for their family to watch TV.  I know they mean that they can let their kids watch our network without fear of sex, violence or ungodly concepts being shown to their impressionable minds.  Yes, this is true and I’m glad of it, but somehow the “safe” tag has never set well with me.  I don’t want us to be safe; I want us to be dangerous.

In my experience too many Christians are worried about being protected from the world.  This is descended from the holiness movement that was a true move of God from about 150 years ago.  However, it led to “rules oriented” Christianity: Don’t drink, don’t go to movies, don’t dance, don’t, don’t, don’t.  Recently it has been expressed in parents restricting their children from watching programs as innocuous as Pokémon.  I do not want to debate the wisdom of such guidelines now, except to say that it can lead to fear of association with non-Christians.  Yet we are commanded to be in the world.

The Bible tells us that “The righteous are as bold as a lion,” and that “the gates of Hell will not prevail against us.”  Cornerstone TeleVision needs not to be safe but to be dangerous; dangerous to the devil. We have the life changing message of God’s love and the power of the Holy Spirit. The devil should be afraid of us; and he is.
